Biographies of Abraham and Mineta

Senator Spencer Abraham

Senator Abraham, 48, was elected into office in 1994 as the first Michigan Republican elected to the Senate in 22 years. This also made him America's youngest U.S. Senator.

The Senator fought for a $500-per-child tax credit during his term and was rewarded with success. Senator Abraham achieved many goals by improving the quality of Michigan roads, curbing unfunded mandates and frivolous lawsuits, improving education standards, stiffening the sentences for drug dealers and protecting Social Security. Along with his perfect attendance record, Senator Abraham introduced 16 bills that became public law.

Spence Abraham obtained his BA at Michigan State University in 1974 and his JD at Harvard University in 1979. At the age of 30, Spence became one of "America's youngest and most successful Republican state chairman". He currently lives in Auburn Hills with his wife Jane, seven-year-old twins Betsy and Julie, and four-year-old son Spencer.
Norman Y. Mineta
