Biographees of Whitman and Thompson Governor Christie Whitman Christine Todd Whitman, 54, is New Jersey's 50th governor and it's first female governor. Whitman was elected into office in 1993 and re-elected in 1997. Whitman previously headed the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and the Somerset County Board of Freeholders. Whitman obtained her bachelors degree in government from Wheaton College in Massachusetts in 1968. Governor Whitman is responsible for New Jersey's first stable source of funding for land preservation. Because of this, by the year 2010 New Jersey will have preserved 40% of its total landmasses. She has also encouraged new growth in cities and significantly improved the state's water quality. For New Jersey's taxes, Whitman has fulfilled her campaign pledge and enacted 38 tax cuts (she pledged 30).
Governor Tommy G. Thompson Wisconsin State governor Thompson, 59, was elected into office in 1986 with 53% of the vote and re-elected in 1990. In 1994 Thompson became Wisconsin's first governor to be elected three times for a four year term...he did it again in 1998. Governor Thompson's five main policy areas are: the economy, ending welfare, education reform, the environment and crime. In 1995 Governor Thompson reduced the property tax in Wisconsin by $1.2 billion (without raising other general taxes). The governor has a total of 91 tax cuts saving Wisconsin families an average of $8,400. Since 1986 Thompson has also created more than 742,300 new jobs, (more manufacturing jobs than any state in the nation), and increased the job population by 15%. Governor Thompson received his B.S. in 1963 and his J.D. in 1966 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The governor has served as chairman of the National Governors’ Association, the Republican Governors’ Association, the Education Commission of the States, the Midwestern Governors’ Conference, the Council of Great Lakes Governors. Currently Governor Thompson serves on the executive committees of the National Governors’ Association, the Republican Governors’ and the Midwest Governors’ Associations, and is chairman of the Amtrak Board of Directors and the Council of State Governments.
